The works of M. Ellen Cocose are an exploration of reflection, refraction, suspension and diffusion. Conveyed with unique ambiguity, richness and depth, they are at once dynamic and contemplative. She engages the viewer in a play between depiction and suggestion. The creation of each painting is a building process of layers of venetian plaster, pigments and acrylics, creating subtleties between layers of value, shape, and line. Layer upon layer, worked and reworked, deconstructed and reconstructed, the finished painting reveals a fresh and intriguing aesthetic.
M. Ellen Cocose began painting and drawing at the age of nine, studying art and classical piano for 6 years at internationally renowned Interlochen Center for the Arts. She continued her art education at college first in Florence Italy, then at University of Illinois - where she studied Medical Illustration, and finally at Columbia College in Chicago - where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Cocose spent the next decade in the advertising world, owning her own commercial studio. In 1997, yearning to go back to her fine art roots, she left advertising, and began her career exclusively as a fine artist. Her inspiration comes from a lifetime of travel. Ellen’s curiosity in other cultures and arts has taken her around the world to over 25 countries in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa.
Cocose’s work is represented in galleries nationwide, and has been exhibited in solo and group shows. Her artwork may be found in corporate and private collections worldwide, including Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, New York City, Calgary, London, Paris, and Seoul.
